Recognize the Symptoms

  • Common Symptoms: Stomach or abdominal discomfort, pain, bloating, vomiting, regurgitation, heartburn/reflux, nausea, flatulence, belching, indigestion.
  • Alarm Symptoms: Age older than 60 years with new-onset dyspepsia, family history of upper gastrointestinal cancer, unintended weight loss, gastrointestinal bleeding, persistent vomiting, progressive difficulty swallowing, unexplained iron-deficiency anemia, palpable mass or lymphadenopathy, jaundice.
Common Symptoms
  • Persistent Stomach or abdominal discomfort or pain
  • Bloating
  • Vomiting (sudden onset vomiting may be a primary symptom)
  • Regurgitation
  • Heartburn/reflux
  • Nausea
  • Flatulence
  • Belching
  • Indigestion
Alarm Symptoms (consider endoscopy) 
  • Age older than 60 years with new-onset dyspepsia
  • Family history of gastrointestinal cancer
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Progressive difficulty swallowing
  • Unexplained iron-deficiency anemia
  • Palpable mass or lymphadenopathy
  • Jaundice

Many of these symptoms can be mild and frequently overlap with other common GI conditions. When patients report these symptoms, testing for H. pylori should be considered.
